YouTuber and Swedish guitarist Ola Englund of metal act the Haunted recently got his hands on both the all-new 5150® Iconic 40W 1×12 Combo and the Iconic 80w Head and matching 4×12.
First up, Englund featured the combo in his popular “Will It Chug?” segment, instantly loving the chug on the channel one with overdrive boosted.
“That my friends is a chug and we’re only on the first channel — channel one,” he proclaimed. “It’s chugging on the clean channel, HELLO, that means something.”
The 12-minute clip continues with Englund chugging on both the Green and Red channels, while adjusting the gain and experimenting with both overdrive and burn boost buttons to find the sweet spots for leads vs chunky rhythmic play.
He also spotlights the noise gate, EQ, reverb, and resonance and presence features.
In conclusion?
“I much prefer the green channel more than the red channel — not sure why,” said Englund. “Maybe there’s a little bit more punch to the green channel, and when you kick in the red, it has a little much too gain. It just softens up the chug a little bit.
“I’m having a lot of fun with this amplifier. It sounds really good.”
In a follow-up video on his channel, Englund took the Iconic half stack through its paces – first taking time to explain the ¼ power switch, burn boost and noise gate features before testing out the two channels across a variety of settings.
“I’m just not sure which channel I like the best. I like both,” he said.
Then, anticipating the demands from his viewers, Englund also experimented with adding an overdrive pedal to the mix, concluding that “it takes an overdrive really well too.”
“I think it sounds badass,” summed up the entertainer. “And it’s for a really kickass price too. If you are a fan of 5150, this is the shit – a really good alternative to the big 5150III amps that go for almost double the price of this.”
